Originally the concepts which have eventually been built into SHV were aimed at highly accurate (sub-pixel) sensing, pixel by pixel, of local discontinuities (edge fragments). As time progressed, however, it became increasingly clear that there was a ready means of using these edge fragments, as they were generated, to establish closed regions, it being possible to achieve this even in the presence of very substantial local shading.
